Many ebike players can set the speed of their ebike to 45km/h or even higher by using a modification programme. Is it possible to set the maximum speed freely?
The answer is no, we think there are 2 considerations:
Firstly, the local traffic regulations, if you use your ebike for commuting, and the maximum speed of ebike is allowed to be no more than 25km/h in your area, then you should not modify your ebike freely.
It is known that in some parts of Europe, the public is allowed to use ebikes up to 45km/h, but these ebikes are classified as mopeds, and users need to have a permit and a driving licence to ride them, and of course, for mopeds, the safety standards required are different from those for ebikes.
It is worth mentioning that these regulations are based on the maximum speed or power of the ebike, which is not actually a moped in terms of product technology and technical classification.For example, in Germany your ebike (also known as a pedelec) should not be fitted with a throttle and should not exceed a maximum speed of 25km/h. If you exceed this, your ebike falls into the moped category, called S-Pedelec.
Secondly, in addition to the traffic regulations, you should also consider whether your electric bike has sufficient mechanical or electrical properties to support your modification idea. For example, the strength of the bike frame, the rated speed of the motor, the parameters of the rated discharge current of the controller, the strength of the brake system support, etc. Most of the ebikes have limitations on the maximum speed they can support. It is recommended that you find out where the speed modification limit of your ebike is before modification.
What happens if I exceed the limit?
Exceeding the rated speed limit will destroy the motor. Of course, it is also possible to damage the controller, because the principle of acceleration is to increase the discharge current and voltage to drive the motor to do work at higher speeds.

When retrofitting, you can enter any value for the parameter, but in practice the speed parameter can be entered in the range of 25-45, because too low a value will give you a bad acceleration experience and too high a value will damage the motor or the controller. This depends on the performance parameters of the controller and motor. Of course, there are also modification enthusiasts who have modified motors and controllers with higher performance, which makes it possible to set higher speeds.
On the other hand, please also pay attention to the braking power, because high speed will inevitably require more braking power, which will speed up the wear of the brake pads, if you find that the braking power is reduced, please buy brake pads in time to replace or buy new brakes to replace when you plan to maintain your bike.
